All BECE graduates who miss placement into one of their five school choices will need this 2025 BECE School Self-Placement guide. Such students and their parents will be required to use the self-placement module.
The SHS Self-Placement Module offers students who passed the BECE but were not placed the chance to reselect a school, its corresponding accommodation type and programme from a list of schools to be made available on the CSSPS SHS/TVET School Placement Online Portal.
In 2020, a total of 78,836 students were not placed. Another 91,601 were not placed in 2021. This went up to some 97,685 and 108,025 in 2023 and 2024, respectively. In 2024 it dropped marginally to 104,918.
This trend is expected to continue in 2025, and students not placed are expected to rise to about 115,000 per the BECEPrep Educational Research Team due to the large number of candidates who sat the BECE in 2025.
Between 2020 and 2024, an average of 68,000 BECE graduates used the self-placement option each year. In 202, 73,390 out of the 104,918 who had to use the module.
Issues such as limited awareness about the self-placement option, technical issues with the portal, or reluctance to accept non-preferred schools can lead to parents and students not using the option.
2025 BECE School Self-Placement Data From 2020-2024

Once a student is not placed in any of the schools selected automatically, he or she will have to use the self-placement option. In 2024, candidates were given the chance to keep changing the school they selected using this option until they started the enrolment process with the school. At that stage, the school chosen using the self-placement module cannot be changed.
Nearly every student has a chance of being placed, and there is a likelihood that many will miss placement. To be given the chance to use the self-placement, the student must not obtain grade 9 in Mathematics, English Language or both.
This guide here will empower both parents and students with the right information ahead of when the placements are released.
