2025 BECE School Self-Placement: Here is a guide

All BECE graduates who miss placement into one of their five school choices will need this 2025 BECE School Self-Placement guide. Such students and their parents will be required to use the self-placement module.

The SHS Self-Placement Module offers students who passed the BECE but were not placed the chance to reselect a school, its corresponding accommodation type, and a programme from a list of schools to be made available on the CSSPS SHS/TVET School Placement Online Portal.

In 2020, a total of 78,836 students were not placed. Another 91,601 were not placed in 2021. This went up to some 97,685 and 108,025 in 2023 and 2024, respectively. In 2024 it dropped marginally to 104,918.

This trend is expected to continue in 2025, and students not placed are expected to rise to about 115,000 per the BECEPrep Educational Research Team due to the large number of candidates who sat the BECE in 2025.

Between 2020 and 2024, an average of 68,000 BECE graduates used the self-placement option each year. In 202, 73,390 out of the 104,918 had to use the module.

Issues such as limited awareness about the self-placement option, technical issues with the portal, or reluctance to accept non-preferred schools can lead to parents and students not using the option.

Once a student is not placed in any of the schools selected automatically, he or she will have to use the self-placement option. In 2024, candidates were given the chance to keep changing the school they selected using this option until they started the enrolment process with the school. At that stage, the school chosen using the self-placement module cannot be changed.

Nearly every student has a chance of being placed, and there is a likelihood that many will miss placement. To be given the chance to use the self-placement, the student must not obtain grade 9 in Mathematics, English language, or both.

This guide here will empower both parents and students with the right information ahead of when the placements are released.

Frequently Asked Questions About School Self-Placement (FAQs)

1. What exactly is the BECE Self-Placement? The Self-Placement module is a feature on the CSSPS placement portal designed for BECE graduates who meet the pass criteria but were not automatically placed into any of their five chosen Senior High Schools or TVET institutions. It provides a second chance for these students to select a school from a list of institutions that still have vacancies.

2. Who is eligible for self-placement? To be eligible, a student must have sat for the BECE and not received a Grade 9 in either English Language or Mathematics. If a student gets Grade 9 in both subjects or in one of them, they will not be eligible for placement and will have to consider other options like re-sitting the exam or enrolling in a private institution.

3. What happens if I don’t get placed in any of my five choices? If you are not automatically placed, the CSSPS portal will indicate your status and give you access to the self-placement module. You will not be left without options as long as you meet the eligibility criteria mentioned above. This guide is designed to help you navigate that exact situation.

4. Can I change the school I selected through the self-placement module? Based on the process in previous years, you are typically allowed to change your self-placed school multiple times before you begin the official enrollment process at the school. Once you have submitted your details to the school for admission, your choice is locked and cannot be changed on the portal.

5. Why do so many students have to use the self-placement option? The high number of students using self-placement is often due to intense competition for a limited number of spots in the country’s most sought-after schools (Category A and B). When a large number of applicants choose the same popular schools, many who meet the general requirements may not get placed, necessitating the use of the self-placement module.

6. Do I have to pay to use the self-placement module? Using the self-placement module itself does not require a separate payment. Access to the placement portal is granted using the voucher you purchase to check your initial results and placement status.

7. After successfully selecting a school through self-placement, what do I do next? Once you have successfully selected and confirmed a school, you should print your Placement Form. This form is the official document you will need to present at the school to begin the admission and enrolment process.
