According to WAEC, the sanctions were applied after investigations into various cases of malpractice. The numbers reveal the gravity of the situation:

  • The subject results of 718 candidates were cancelled outright.
  • The entire results of 177 candidates were cancelled.
  • The subject results of 1,240 candidates are currently being withheld.
  • The entire results of 93 candidates have also been withheld pending further investigation.

Beyond individual candidates, the issue extends to entire schools. WAEC confirmed that subject results from some candidates in 119 schools have been cancelled, and subject results from another 87 schools have been withheld for deeper scrutiny.

 

The Challenge of Uncertainty: A Race Against Time

For students with withheld results, the most immediate challenge is the agonizing wait. WAEC has indicated that a final decision—whether to release or cancel these results—will be made after investigations are concluded by September 6, 2025.

This two-week period is critical. With the Senior High School placement process on the horizon, these students are in limbo. They cannot participate in the school selection process, and their academic future hangs in the balance. This uncertainty creates immense psychological distress for both the students and their parents, who can do little but wait for a verdict.

The Emotional and Psychological Toll on Students

 

A student’s first major external examination is a significant life event. Having their results withheld or cancelled can lead to:
